Boxing is a sport in which diligence is not always rewarded fairly. Some pugilists amass an undefeated record against lesser opposition, are given a title shot against a less-than-worthy adversary, get spoon fed a belt, and proceed to hop on social media acting as if they accomplished something great. They are not Champions, they are entertainers. Other fighters give it their all in the gym every day, take bouts on short notice, grit through the tough weight loss regimen and win, only to be put on the back burner until another prospect needs a short notice opponent. Demond Nicholson(18-2-1 17KO) doesn’t fall into either category, but rather in the category of the hopeful, hard working prospect. Read more
DMV boxing fans, tune in to HBO on October 21st as our own Alantez “Slyaza” Fox(23-0-1 11KO) will take on former Junior Middleweight World Champion Demetrius “BooBoo” Andrade(24-0 16KO). The contest will be Andrade’s first fight at the Middleweight limit of 160 pounds. Meanwhile, the 6’5” Fox will enjoy a comfortable height and reach advantage over Andrade. This fight will be the co-feature of the night at the Turning Stone Resort and Casino in Verona. Fox was kind enough to take some time from his training to answer a few of my questions regarding his preparation for the fight.

DMV boxing has a strong start to the New Year ahead with Richmond’s Immanuwel Aleem (16-0-1 9KO) taking on Ievgen Khytrov (14-0 12KO) for the vacant WBC Silver Middleweight Title. The current titleholder, Tureano Johnson, will be stripped of the belt due to inactivity caused by injuries. That’s bad news for Johnson, but great news for the winner of this bout! On the outskirts of Southside Richmond, just across the James River Bridge, the liveliness of the city quickly fades into ruggedness. It’s hard to travel a quarter mile in any direction without encountering an individual holding a cardboard sign telling tales of tough times. Lining the streets are rundown buildings with faded wood panels falling off of the sides, boards across the windows and doors from years of being uninhabited. Small businesses are sporadically placed along the sides of the streets, mostly convenience stores with cigarette advertisements on windows which are barely visible due to the bars covering them. Numerous warehouses along the sides of the city streets sport large bay doors and bundles of lumber and machinery behind barbed wire fences. Within one warehouse on the 2400 block of Hull Street, the sounds of rhythmic thudding and a loud buzzer fills the air. Here, nestled in the rough exterior of Richmond, is the boxing gym Ninth Dimension Sports Circle, owned by Coach Omar Aleem. Read more
