This weekend, we are going to be treated to a batch of three Championship Title fights in the Jr. Middleweight division (don’t get me started on how ridiculous that sounds to have three Champions at the same weight class). The card will be televised on Showtime starting Saturday night. Let’s take a closer look at the fighters and dabble in a few predictions shall we?
The first match of the night will take place between newly crowned IBF Champion and Maryland native, “Swift” Jarrett Hurd (20-0 14KO) and tough as nails former World Champion Austin “No Doubt” Trout (30-3 17KO). Hurd will enjoy a noticeable height and reach advantage over Trout, and has shown in the past his ability to use those physical advantages effectively. He also possesses respectable power, although Trout has never been knocked out. Trout brings to the table far greater experience having shared a ring with the likes of Miguel Cotto, Canelo Alvarez and Erislandy Lara. This is a very close fight, but I’m giving the edge to Trout due to his ruggedness and experience.
Trout by decision.
The second Title contention will be between WBC Champion Jermell Charlo (29-0 14KO) and Erickson “The Hammer” Lubin (18-0 13KO). Charlo is a skilled boxer, and has wins over notable opponents Vanes Martirosyan, John Jackson and Charles Hatley, but lacks experience at the top echelon. Likewise, Lubin lacks elite level competition but passes the eye test as a high level contender. I think Lubin may be a little too green at this point, but will be a future champion. Charlo will catch him clean later in the fight causing the referee to stop it.
Charlo by TKO.
The main event of the evening pits IBO and WBA Champion Erislandy “The American Dream” Lara (24-2-2 14KO) against former US Olympian Terrell Gausha (20-0 9KO). This is the easiest to call on paper, but this is boxing so anything can happen. Gausha is a good boxer and has high caliber skills, but I don’t see anything he brings to the table the will give Lara significant problems.
Lara by decision.
