Who’s ready for another night of boxing? I know I am! Fortunately, that night is right around the corner. Friday July 29th marks the next installment of the Premier Boxing Champions series on Spike TV. Let’s see what we have to look forward to.
Headlining the event, Adonis “Superman” Stevenson (27-1 22KO) will be defending his WBC Light Heavyweight World Title against Thomas Williams Jr. (20-1 14KO). Williams earned his title shot with a second round knockout over Edwin Rodriguez in April. Williams showed his punching power and resolve in that fight, taking punches to land his own. Stevenson’s punching power is far superior to Rodriguez’s though, so Williams won’t be able to afford trading with him. What Stevenson isn’t known for, is defensive prowess. If Williams can catch him clean, then it will be an early night. I can’t see this one going to decision.
On the undercard (leading off the televised portion I’m told) Richmond, Virginia’s Immanuwel Aleem (16-0 9KO) will put his 0 on the line against the power punching Demond Nicholson (17-1 16KO) of Laurel, Maryland. Aleem enters the fight off of an impressive unanimous decision victory in April against another slugger, Jonathan Cepeda. In that fight, Aleem controlled the distance and scored repeatedly with sharp, accurate punching. Nicholson is riding a 7 fight win streak since his lone defeat. Both DMV area fighters are skilled at their craft, and this bout is the one I’m looking most forward to.
