Capital Heights Maryland native Gary Antuanne Russell qualified for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio last weekend. He will be representing the USA in the light welterweight division. Russell hails from a family of boxers (older brother, Gary Russell Jr. was on the 2008 Olympic team and is currently the WBC Featherweight Champion.) and hopes to bring a gold medal back home. The scholar-athlete was valedictorian of his graduating class and a former National Golden Gloves Champion.
Joining Russell in Rio will be USA flyweight representative, Antonio Vargas who qualified in the same tournament. Vargas is a former Pan American Games champion form Kissimee, Florida (originally from Houston, Texas). Vargas has a plethora of experience against high-level Olympic boxers and hopes that it will lead him to a gold medal.
